Traveling solo through Sri Lanka as a Digital Nomad

Digital Nomad in Sri Lanka

Discover Sri Lanka: my digital nomad adventure as a solo traveler

Last summer I traveled solo through Sri Lanka for 30 days. Sri Lanka is an island full of amazing landscapes, rich culture, and the most friendly people. It is a destination perfect for solo travelers, including women. One of the first questions that often comes up when people hear that I travel alone as a woman is, “Is it safe?” Yes, it is safe!

It is important to take usual precautions, such as not being out on the streets alone too late at night, and showing respect for local culture, especially in terms of how you dress yourself. But overall, I always felt safe and welcome in Sri Lanka. The locals are extremely friendly and helpful.

One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to Yala National Park, located in the southeastern part of Sri Lanka. Known for its incredible biodiversity, this park is home to a wide range of wildlife, including leopards, bears, elephants and numerous bird species. Seeing these majestic animals in their natural habitat was an absolute highlight of my trip.

But Sri Lanka has so much more to offer than just its natural beauty. It also has a rich history and culture dating back thousands of years. You can explore ancient temples, discover the remains of ancient kingdoms, and enjoy local cuisine that offers an explosion of flavors.

My adventure began in Negombo and took me past the historic city of Anuradhapura, the majestic Sigiriya Rock, the cultural heart of Kandy, picturesque Ella, the Tissamaharama area near Yala National Park, the beautiful coastal town of Mirissa, historic Galle and finally Colombo. Each of these destinations has its own unique charm and experiences to enjoy.

Another highlight was my train ride from Kandy to Ella, a quaint town that enchants you with its natural beauty. The Nine Arch Bridge, an architectural marvel, is an absolute must-see here. The train ride itself is an adventure in itself, with breathtaking views of mountains and tea plantations.

My advice for future travelers to Sri Lanka is not to travel too fast. This was a mistake I made myself, driven by the desire to see as much as possible in my limited time of 30 days. This, combined with my work obligations as a digital nomad and sometimes unreliable internet in remote locations, caused some stress at times. If you have the time, consider extending your visa and traveling at a more leisurely pace.

In short, Sri Lanka is a destination that will take every traveler’s heart. Whether you are looking for natural beauty, cultural experiences, or just want to relax on beautiful beaches, Sri Lanka has it all. And for solo women, rest assured, it is a safe and welcoming place to explore.
